CREATE is a catalyst for leadership, friendships and real social impact. Beginning as a club at Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School, it quickly expanded past school walls to become a federally registered non-profit. CREATE brings together hundreds of youth through a 3-day leadership conference and 8 team initiatives throughout the year.
My tenure on the council consisted of a rebrand to emphasize the human and social aspect of the conference and major changes as president, expanding the reach of our programming and establishing a plan for long-term success and growth.

Challenges
As the Director of Marketing at this time, the council had to navigate the challenges of transitioning back to an in-person commitment after years of virtual conferences.
Positioning: CREATE had largely grown because of word of mouth. However, as new high-schoolers joined online, students often knew of CREATE lacked information about the purpose of the council.
Engagement: CREATE is an experience however, online conferences made capturing moments a challenge. The past design system was very graphic and failed to communicate the energy of CREATE.

Our graphics began to feature people, by seeing friends, acquaintances in our promotional material people would engage more with our media and be more likely to stop scrolling.
Through a more rustic colour palette and design system, focused on natural colours we brought create back to it’s roots, an outdoors, youth leadership conference. Through our rebrand we clarified our messaging and allowed photos to tell stories and capture the true energy of CREATE.

I was appointed President of CREATE Markham in September of 2023, the previous year was our first year back in person and we experienced a significant decrease in enrolment because of this. We identified key barriers and developed solutions leading to unprecedented growth

Financial Accessibility
The cost of a weekend-long conference was a significant factor for many in the decision making. Through newly identified cost efficiencies and corporate funding, we were able to reduce the cost by 20% for all participants and fully fund a financial aid program.

Renewed Culture
CREATE is a deeply social organization and this was key in my leadership as President. Through a collaborative leadership style, the executive team was able to connect, meetings turned into conversations and as we became friends, an open environment welcome to growth and criticism was developed.

Delegate Pairs
Many new students felt socially isolated during the pandemic and we recognized that the transition to weekend-long conference with randomly generated teams was daunting to many. By introducing Delegate Pairs, a pair of friends would be guaranteed to be in the same team, reducing the social barrier.

Often teams had difficulty planning and executing community initiatives to be both engaging and impactful. By establishing a partnership with a community organization for each team, teams could have more resources for their initiatives and have a more clear goal for their impact.
